Miramar Town Centre Upgrade - Newsletter 6, 31 May 2013

Just to make it very clear, what follows is NOT WRITTEN BY ME. I am NOT the project manager of the Miramar Town Centre Upgrade, that role is taken up by Kevin Murphy (kevin.murphy@wcc.govt.nz). What’s happened this week
Installation of drainage in the new car park has been completed, kerb and channel has been poured and work has started on laying the basecourse ready to receive the new surface.   The entrance to the new car park from Miramar Avenue has been prepared as part of this work.

Work has also commenced on stabilizing the footings for the tram shelter in preparation for a new concrete floor slab to be poured.

What’s happening next week
“Boxing” and reinforcing steel will be installed at the car park entrance and, weather permitting, concrete will be poured to form the pedestrian platform.

As this work will mean the footpath will temporarily need to be diverted on to the road, we ask people to take care when walking along the Miramar Avenue edge.  Please watch out for the diversion signs and follow any verbal directions of site personnel.

Work will also get under way to prepare the ground for the new car park exit.

Other news
This week we will be finalizing the contract for the installation of the new public toilet on the corner of Park Road and Miramar Avenue.  We anticipate this work will get under way towards the end of June.

Progress to date
Completion of some tasks is a little behind schedule but as we approach the halfway stage we remain confident that the upgrade will be completed by mid-July.

The Difference Between One Million And One Billion

It's feels like a billion is just a bit bigger than a million. Obviously it's bigger but it fits on the same scale as a million, surely. It doesn't. A billion is so so so much bigger than a million. I've trawled the internet finding graphics and videos that show the VAST difference between one million and one billion. Oh, and just to finish with a different misconception about space starting with the classic opening line from the great Douglas Adams and The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy : “Space is big. The office has all been moved around - new desks (with starter handles to raise and lower them), new high(er) speed network and ... the same old work.
