Day 06 - Favorite super hero and why

Righty-ho, favourite super hero ... Homer Simpson, not hero enough, um, how about ... oh I dunno.

Yes, yes I do - Sherlock Holmes!

Is he really a superhero though - well, for you youngsters needing it all fast and biffo based check out last year's film and then you'll soon agree.

But why Sherlock Holmes - because he is clever, fallible, always gets the baddies always (almost) and is fiercely independent. He is also loyal to those closest to him and to his ideals.

AND, I love this quote from A Study In Scarlet:
"What the deuce is it to me?" he interrupted impatiently; "you say that we go round the sun. If we went round the moon it would not make a pennyworth of difference to me or to my work."

Here's a picture of the finest actor ever to portray Holmes - I had the greatest pleasure ever imaginable to see him on stage playing Sherlock alongside Edward Hardwicke, also from the TV series.

(name the other 2 characters without asking :-)

And then there's this photo of a very young me outside The Sherlock Holmes Pub at 10-11 Northumberland Street, London ... go on, giggle, I did:

And finally - read the books, they are brilliant!
AND, they are out of copyright so you can get them free online - here, here or via here.

And then go to 221b Baker Street ... yes, it really exists, see their video (that intro music is from the Jeremy Brett TV series, so evocative to me).

BTW, did you know: There’s currently [loads of] New Zealanders – largely women – taking part in a communal daily blogging meme called #30daysofme which started in New Zealand on September 7th. Follow or subscribe to [most of] the blog posts here. The originator of the #30daysofme meme is Wellingtonian Suzi Heath (aka @pebblesy) however the list of topics was found elsewhere online as a motivation to help get back into blogging.

  1. Someone (Philip jose farmer?) wrote a series of books in which fictional characters like Holmes, Doc Savage, Batman possibly, Tarzan, etc etc, are all related & descended from Norse Gods.
