1 Action Point: Help Defend Our NZ Creative Freedom

Here in New Zealand there are a number of central government pressures coming to apply on all Kiwi's limiting what we can/cannot do with "content" and even more scary what companies can do if they suspect (merely suspect, no prove required) that you are breaking copyright-type laws.

And closer to home (for me) Wellington is a darned creative space with a lot of people doing international quality work in a sphere's of creativity - web, music, design, events - ad therefore I think the trend sucks (read more about ACTA / Section92a)

But what can you do?
Support the CreativeFreedom.org.nz that "speaks for artists concerned at this trend and through Our Goals we seek to bring Copyright Law into the 21st Century".

That's it. Support the site, let others know of your support and pass on the word.
Of course you could go a step frther and actually get involved but let's just get the word out for now.

CreativeFreedom.org.nz Launches With Campaign Against Guilt Upon Accusation Laws In NZ

The Creative Freedom Foundation launches this week in New Zealand to unite artists who are against the removal of New Zealander's rights through proposed changes in Copyright law, done in the name of protecting creativity.

The Creative Freedom Foundation's first campaign is against a proposed law in New Zealand: Section 92 of the Copyright Amendment Act. S92 assumes 'Guilt Upon Accusation' – cutting off internet connections and websites based on accusations of Copyright infringement, without evidence or even a trial.

Foundation Co-Founder and Director, Bronwyn Holloway-Smith says:
“The result of this law could be that one rogue employee or even one virus infected computer could bring down a whole organisation's internet and it's highly likely that schools, businesses, hospitals, and phone services will be harmed by this.”

On 28 February 2009, S92 will come into effect in New Zealand if there is no positive action on the part of the Government to change it. To date the Government has shown support for the bill and, unless there is major public protest against it, it will “roll over” in to law.

Although the Creative Freedom Foundation has just launched, it is already gathering steady support. Artist, Curator, and PHD Candidate Dan Untitled says:
“25% of computers are infected with viruses that download and distribute material without the owners knowledge. What if that owner is a school or hospital? Clearly, this situation is ridiculous. Laws like this are outrageous, and as an artist I don't want them done in my name. For me, the decision to support the CFF was clear cut. What they are doing is fantastic – I fully endorse it, and encourage others to as well.“

The Difference Between One Million And One Billion

It's feels like a billion is just a bit bigger than a million. Obviously it's bigger but it fits on the same scale as a million, surely. It doesn't. A billion is so so so much bigger than a million. I've trawled the internet finding graphics and videos that show the VAST difference between one million and one billion. Oh, and just to finish with a different misconception about space starting with the classic opening line from the great Douglas Adams and The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy : “Space is big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind-bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist's, but that's just peanuts to space.”

[Updated] Pubs of 2024 Monmouth

"Back in the day", yada yada yada, yes we all know there were more pubs than people, there was a pub every two houses, the largest number of pubs per square mile than anywhere in the known universe, there was a pub named after each and every one of us, and yet, YET we only ever went to same one every time. Monmouth has changed, it now only has 10 pubs.  "Ten! Ten? It used to be ten pubs just in the top of town. There were ten pubs I'd walk past to get to my local." Yes, yes ... times change, we now have 10 pubs in Monmouth . Oh, and the Mayhill but that seems to be more a ghost pub, it can be seen but only in the dark and no-one will believe if you say you went in. Monmouth, a town in Wales (YES, it is in Wales ), a town that has a population of around 10,317 (as at 2021). A town who's 1980's population was, well, I don't know, despite a century of censuses being taken, it's impossible to find (1991: 8,206 | 2001: 8,877 | 2011: 10,508 | 2021: 1
