It took some detective work but I found it, right at the bottom of Comprehensive Sound Problem Solutions Guide on the Ubuntu Forums.

webbca01 figured out how to get AC'97 work with the help of the second last post here and this post. Basically, if you have an intel8x0 module, you can get AC'97 working by

sudo nano /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base
and adding this as the last line:

Too many people comfortably plump themselves into an army of one type or another . Surrounded by those that sound like you, listen to you intently whilst nodding, and echo your thoughts on why the fight is a good fight and that the other side are such bad terrible people. I used to be more like that than I am nowadays ... hmmmm, aren't we humans meant to become more conservative and reactionary as we age, strange Mike. What Is The Speed Of Light, No-One Knows

C, the letter "c", is used to represent the speed of light in equations. You know it, E=mc² , that's, energy is mass times the result of the speed of light times the speed of light .  In a vacuum (not through air, or water, or anything else) the speed of light is 299,792,458 meters per second. Bloody fast eh! Whilst an atom is very very very small if you times it by the speed of light² that gives a lot, a fucking lot, of energy. Hence the atomic bomb going big boom! But, is that really the speed? 299,792,458 meters per second is the speed as measured with a round trip, the speed of light that went from a source, to something, and back again. But what if it's twice that speed on the outward journey and instant on the way back, we'd get the same answer.  Huh? Watch this ...
