I like the HAL approach from Microsoft's IE
HAL, the computer from 2001: A Space Odyssey is famously subservient whilst he is being very directive - "I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that." (Wikiquote)
HAL seems to have infiltrated Internet Explorer but is staying clear of Firefox which is much more direct.
