Petrol tax

Let me start of by saying I'm not a great advocate of cars, I don't own one, I rarely drive one, I don't really enjoy them and I most certainly have no idea what goes on inside them.

That out of the way ... can someone please explain to me (honestly) why the government of the day have added 5c tax to the petrol that powers these vehicles? I just don't get it?

I know they say they need more money to fix the roads (or upgrade them, or built new ones - whatever) but haven't they got a stack load of money in their piggybank already?

And, from a political view (which I rarely take) how does this in anyway win Labour votes? The talk around the water-cooler from people I would guess as Labour voters is of bemusment, annoyance and general pissed-off-ness.

I dunno, sometimes people make it hard from themselves eh!
