Two Dennis The Menace'sesses

If you're from the UK and/or the USA then you are fully aware of a comic character that goes by the name of Dennis The Menace. In the UK he stars, alongside his dog Gnasher, in The Beano and I was in his fan club. Dennis the Menace and Gnasher (previously titled Dennis the Menace and Dennis and Gnasher) is a long-running comic strip in the children's comic The Beano, published by DC Thomson, of Dundee in Scotland. The comic stars a boy named Dennis the Menace and his dog, an "Abyssinian wire-haired tripe hound" named Gnasher. Over the pond there was a different Dennis The Menace, he didn't even have a fan club. Dennis the Menace is a daily syndicated newspaper comic strip originally created, written, and illustrated by Hank Ketcham. All terribly cool but the best part is that both characters were introduced to the world on EXACTLY THE SAME DAY, total coincidence! Both were published on March 12 1951 .

Be Selfish And Make It Easy For Them

Years ago I worked at the Ministry of Health based up the top of Molesworth Street, a building with a swanky entrance up a few levels from the footpath. One week they were fixing up the "disabled" ramp that allowed people with wheelchairs etc to pass the steps and enter reception. All sorted, easy job. The following Monday I noticed that courier cyclists were zooming up the ramp. Hah, it wasn't built for them but it certainly made their life a lot easier. It is called the ' curb cut effect ' The curb cut effect is the phenomenon of disability-friendly features being used and appreciated by a larger group than the people they were designed for.  Excellent designers, be they of physical things, processes, or electronic malarkey, know this and by making something universally accessible they make it so much easier for me. Thank you! I love these other examples: Closed Captioning (Subtitles) : Created for the d/Deaf or hard of hearing, they are widely used in noisy pu...

Catch The Bus They Said, It'll Be Fun They Said

It starts so simply on a cold January day, at 11:27am a guy wakes up on the bus he's caught to get home: I just woke up from a nap and somehow while I was asleep, everyone on the bus has figured out we are not going to the right place. And thus the venture started with the following posts taking us up to 11:48am: they switched drivers at a rest stop and the new driver is telling everyone that they’re the ones on the wrong bus?? he’s refusing to talk to anyone while he’s driving and is now just driving really fast people are calling the police I think I might end up in Vienna Virginia but I’m …not sure??? two big guys just went up and said we’re going to Union station!! and he said no we’re not someone got the bus company on the phone they’re looking into it but he’s still insisting we’re not going to Washington DC It’s particularly weird because this route only has three stops: penn station, union station, and DuPont circle The bus company says they are trying to call the driver a...

Why Can't We Be In Flow State All The Time?

You know what it is, but just in case: Flow in positive psychology, also known colloquially as being in the zone or focused, is the mental state in which a person performing some activity is fully immersed in a feeling of energized focus, full involvement, and enjoyment in the process of the activity. In essence, flow is characterized by the complete absorption in what one does, and a resulting transformation in one's sense of time. Sounds awesome eh - why can't we be in that for ever? Probably absolutely knackering eh, although it seems like it's a 'restive' state of mind. Maybe this is what Buddhists and those that meditate also experience, do they get knackered? If one becomes an  " enlightened one " (there's been a stack of Buddha's over the centuries however we normally only think of Siddhartha G ) perhaps that's being in the flow constantly. If you're bored with it all and can't be bothered which makes you anxious you're unlik...

When You Are Given A Compliment Be Like Margaret Thatcher & Paul McCartney

Years ago I read an article in the Sunday Times Magazine that outlined the one common trait that 'all' successful people had in common, they say, "Thank you" when given a compliment about something they have done. Through the mists of time I recall three of the people given as examples of successful people that all say "thank you", Richard Branson, Margaret Thatcher, and Paul McCartney. The line about McCartney went something like this If you tell McCartney that you think Yesterday is an excellent song he won't try and brush it off as, "Just one of the many songs we wrote", or, "It wasn't me it was the muse", he will unashamedly say, "Thank you." Something like that.  I have Googled everything I can over many years to see if I can find the original article (which may or may not have actually be Sunday Times Magazine, who knows) - nothing, never found anything of the article nor any such research the article was probably...
