My Leg Lump Has Gone

For most of my adult life I have had a small, raised, and darker coloured bump on my right calf. Identified by a doctor as an insect bite that I had maybe scratched and got a wee bit infected at the time, but certainly nothing to worry about. I noticed recently that the bump has gone completely, just a little bit of discoloration left. Weird eh!

The Tracks To Train Weirdness

Everyone I know is fully aware of Quentin and his I'm A Train  video which, I thought, was a song he had composed and sung. Turns out the road to this visual bemusement is not quite so simple. We start with the original, written and composed by Albert Hammond and Mike Hazlewood . It was first recorded in French, in 1967, by Les Troubadours as "La chaîne". The first English version was recorded in 1968 by a UK group called Colors of Love, which included singer Elaine Paige. Hammond's own version, released in 1974, was the first one to chart.  I'd never heard of Albert Hammond OBE before but his compositions have most certainly been a part of my growing up: Hammond wrote commercially successful singles for singers Celine Dion, Joe Dolan, Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, Diana Ross, Leo Sayer, Tina Turner, Glen Campbell, Julio Iglesias, Willie Nelson, Lynn Anderson and Bonnie Tyler, and bands Ace of Base, Air Supply, Blue Mink, Chicago, Heart, Living in a Box, the...

Superpowers, Which Would You Choose

This is most awesome from the Why Would You Tell Me That!? podcast, especially the qualifiers - which superpower are you choosing: You are invisible BUT only during June, July, and August,  You can fly BUT you'll always be hungry, You can teleport BUT only up to a maximum of 80 kilometres a day, You can cure all illness IF the patient is a murderer,  You can tell the future BUT only in/of the next 2.5 hours.

AI Hallucinating Information About 'Mike Riversdale'

"AI" / LLM , it's mostly useless despite Google stuffing it into every part of their ecosystem ...there are hints that it might, in a few years, be useful but we're definitely not there yet. However, it can be used to generate (on the back of the world's information oh so generously supplied by humans over the centuries!?) weird and wacky malarkey. We've all seen the 'funny' images and 'humorous' videos but how about a Wiki that is generated on the fly from anything you want. It's called Halu-pedia , I assume from a concatenation of Hallucination + Encyclopedia, and I entered my name to get a list of pages it would create on the fly for us. Madness really, but what the heck. More "AI" posts : "AI", It's All A Bit Worrying, No?  (Apr 2026) I Love The Chinese Room (Dec 2023) 2 Ways Of Sciencing, And 1 That AI Doesn't ... Yet? Celebrities Connecting Via Screens Whilst We Watch

I'm a bit all over the place with the Screens theme but hey, who cares! Here's the Connecting set of 7, along with Celebrity , and Watching . I think it's Computers  next and then we're done with this theme (sounds like a chore, but it's not really). Lot easier just to join the albums tbh: 🖼️ Mike's daily photo - From Then To Now 🖼️ Mike's daily photo - Themes Connecting (via screens) Celebrities (on screen) Watching (screens)

Why Japanese "Unuseless" Inventions AND Fascinating Names Give Us Hope

On the surface these 2 articles could be seen as unrelated, but I would posit that they are both human endeavours that fit into the "absurd worldview" helping the creators survive feelings of saṃvega ("the urgent realisation that you need a more meaningful life"). They also give me a big smile and a warm feeling because of their efforts. It's a cold and unfeeling universe but hey, there's a baby mop in the world, and someone was once called Biff Life, it's not all bad eh. Chindōgu: The Unuseless Inventions of Kenji Kawakami Chindōgu 珍道具ちんどうぐ is made up of two words. Chin 珍ちん means "curious" or "strange." Dougu 道具どうぐ means "tool" or "device" - a term coined by chindōgu’s originator Kenji Kawakami. "Strange device" doesn't quite capture the entire meaning though. There's an essence to chindōgu that can't be ignored. They need to be useful, but only just so. Something people could use, but proba...

Miles Jupp is one funny dude AND has one of the most delicious and catchable (infectious?) laughs. I am so happy he has a gloriously short topical podcast,  The Moment with Miles Jupp , and everyone should listen to his jokes AND the adverts. The Moment with Miles Jupp, a concentrated burst of up-to-the-minute comedy that sums up where we are right now and dispels the blues of life in 2025

A Day in the Life of an Enshittificator

Enter the Internet. All of a sudden I didn't have to move around to make things shitty. I could just sit in one place and make things shitty for way more people at the same time. A Day in the Life of an Ensh*ttificator , from Forbrukerrådet  (Norwegian Consumer Council). Canadian writer Cory Doctorow coined the neologism enshittification in November 2022.
