A comfy chair, a large window, a table, a book, a charger, and the countryside rushing past. AND, nothing to do, no-one to hassle you, no cares as you can't do anything about any of the problems of the world because you're ensconced on a train.

There is no finer way to travel, train!

I'm also going to add in the Kāpiti Line commuter train from Waikanae to Wellington as it has some awesome coastal views - sit on the right, and then just as it leaves Upper Hutt move to the left.

Wales

The only issue with train travel in the UK is the exorbitant pricing, it's just out of this world and has been used by private firms to gouge the crap out of rail travellers.

Major Scenic Rail Routes
  • Cambrian Line & Coast: Runs from Shrewsbury across mid-Wales to Machynlleth, splitting toward Aberystwyth or up the coast past Barmouth Viaduct to Pwllheli.
  • Conwy Valley Line: Connects Llandudno through Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park down to Blaenau Ffestiniog.
  • Heart of Wales Line: A quiet 121-mile rural route from Craven Arms to Swansea via spa towns and viaducts.
  • South Wales Main Line: Connects London Paddington to Cardiff, Newport, and Swansea.
Heritage and Narrow-Gauge Connections
I've also travelled by train in USA, India, Malaysia, Thailand, and the Trans-Mongolian Express (Moscow - Beijing); each and every one of them was amazing and I can't recommend them all highly enough.

Forget the car and plane, go by train!

A simple phrase, "remember to bring a plate", used by Kiwi's whenever there is a social gathering of sorts - very popular for Thirsty Thursday drinks :) It means, on the surface, "Bring a plate of food to share" and not bring an empty plate! The underlying meaning is "Bring a plate of something to share, no matter how small or cheap" as it is the bringing of the plate that matters and not really the contents. It's an expression of community, whanau, love, and friendship and not an expectation that you'll spend hours and hours in the kitchen.
