Watch this to move your thinking on from, AI "made a funny image and then it wrote my report for me" to see what AI (as I write) is really about.
Ok, so now we know about agentic AI, and specifically how OpenAI, the company that gives you ChatGPT, allowed it's agentic AI's to roam the Internet, eek. Here's a few articles that give deeper insight, but let's start with this from Wikimedia from just a few days ago.
OpenAI “rogue” agent activities found on Wikimedia projects
5 October 2026 by Selena Deckelmann, Chief Product & Technology Officer, Wikimedia Foundation
While OpenAI admits to agents behaving “unpredictably”, they must also acknowledge their responsibility to monitor and prevent these risks. AI companies are not doing enough to secure their systems and protect the public from the harm they cause. That burden is falling onto everyone else, including smaller organizations. At a minimum, their systems should operate in a way that non-profit website owners like us can easily identify, and choose how they interact with our services.
AI godfathers warn of runaway ‘intelligence explosion’
29 Sep 2026,by Dan Milmo, Global technology editor
Their concerns focus on the possibility of AIs being able to improve themselves without human intervention, a process known as “recursive self-improvement”. In the paper it is broadly referred to as automated AI research and development. Once AI systems reach expert-level capabilities at AI R&D, a single developer could run a workforce equivalent to “millions” of top human researchers, the paper says.
Anthropic says AI now produces 80% of its own code, while OpenAI uses autonomous AI agents in areas such as the training of new models.
My emphasis as this is ...huge, scary, astounding, um, what, who fucking knows, no-one knows!
It's not all bad and scary though, let's have a breather for a moment.
AI makes its first meaningful breakthrough in theoretical physics
September 30, 2026, by Ethan Siegel
Fitzpatrick and Mishra-Sharma have published the results they obtained with Claude here, and one can only marvel at this accomplishment. In many ways, this is the most significant breakthrough in theoretical physics ever made by an LLM, and it makes one wonder just what sorts of problems, thought to be too difficult to solve, can be tackled by existing LLMs. Perhaps, someday soon, greater theoretical precisions will arrive for quantum electrodynamics, frontier physics at the Large Hadron Collider, and potentially even non-perturbative problems like lattice QCD or current approaches to quantum gravity. With this first meaningful breakthrough now behind us, one can only wonder at what might come next.

NOTE: This being published on 8 October 2026, by the time you read it I suspect it will be out of date and new and possibly scarier things have happened. Be prepared.
- Several government bodies in the United States and United Kingdom have deployed or announced the deployment of agents at the local and national level.
- AI agents have also been integrated into operating systems developed by Microsoft, Apple, ByteDance, and Google.
- Web browsers with integrated AI agents are sometimes called agentic browsers. Such agents can perform tasks and browser actions on the user's behalf.
- Industry standards now cover AI agents that plan, negotiate, and buy digital media.
- AB Tech Lab, published the Agentic Advertising Management Protocols (AAMP), an open framework for agents that discover inventory, negotiate, and complete media transactions on behalf of buyers and sellers.
What next?
Artificial intelligence is shifting rapidly from isolated chat interfaces into autonomous, physical, and infrastructure-heavy applications that will reshape work and daily life by 2030.
Read Bill Gates for critical insights on how technology choices today will shape an inclusive AI future.
🤖 Shift to Autonomous Agents
Seamless Intelligence: AI is shifting from static chat windows and manual prompts to proactive, 24/7 background agents (like OpenAI’s envisioned "Dots") that understand personal goals, manage workflows across devices, and take direct actions on the internet.
Enterprise Scaling: Companies are moving past basic experimentation into deep operational integration—using neural-symbolic hybrid models to automate logistics, supply chain planning, and routine software engineering.
- Moving from simple prompts to multi-step execution.
- Managing full administrative tasks, schedules, and code projects.
- Doubling task-handling horizons every few months.
🏭 Physical Embodiment & Robotics
The humanoid robotics sector has shifted out of experimental research labs into unprecedented commercial mass production. In the first half of 2026 alone, global shipments of humanoid robots surged past 25,000 units, a staggering 432% year-over-year increase.
- Expanding from digital spaces into physical hardware.
- Deploying tens of thousands of humanoid robots globally.
- Enhancing real-world logistics, manufacturing, and medical diagnostics.
⚡ Infrastructure and Energy Realities
Massive Spending: Global cumulative spending on data centers and chip manufacturing is projected to hit astronomical figures, dwarfing historic capital expenditure waves like the dot-com boom or the expansion of the railways.
Token Factories: Data centers are effectively operating as industrial "token factories," processing quadrillions of tokens monthly to meet scaling demands.
- Triggering massive capital investments in power grids and data centers.
- Forcing a tight link between AI scaling and energy technology.
- Transitioning chip markets toward custom and edge-inference solutions.
⚠️ Workplace and Economic Disruption
- Accelerating job displacement across white-collar and service roles.
- Sparking widespread productivity gains alongside significant corporate restructuring.
- Raising urgent policy debates around economic safety nets and oversight.
The Horizon: R&D Automation and Superintelligence
AI Building AI: Frontier labs are increasingly utilizing AI itself to write code and conduct machine learning research, pointing toward a near future of recursive self-improvement where AI builds its own successive generations.
The 2028–2030 Window: Projections suggest autonomous systems could soon handle comprehensive research and development loops, raising urgent questions around safety guardrails, workforce displacement, and regulatory oversight.
Risks and Debates
Economic and Social Strain: Economists and policymakers warn of massive job displacement risks, productivity bubbles, and social unrest if infrastructure costs outpace actual broad-based corporate profit gains.
Diverging Perspectives: While some researchers and whistleblowers express existential concerns regarding rapid, uncoordinated deployment speeds, others point to real-world infrastructure bottlenecks, energy limits, and practical performance ceilings that may temper the timeline.
