It didn't just rain it hailed and it poured down although luckily it was all gone in 30 minutes or so.

Landscape view of dark heavy cloud front above and to the left, it's definitely going to rain soon. A light blue sky is seen to the far right, the sun will come back out again, hopefully.

It's true there were dark storm clouds, heavy, black, and pendulous, towards which they were driving.
