5 Common Logical Fallacies and How to Spot Them

Image
I want to run through something important but often overlooked in our daily conversations, debates, and even our own thinking: logical fallacies . Understanding logical fallacies is like having a mental toolkit for spotting weak arguments, manipulation, and plain old fuzzy thinking. It's about sharpening your critical thinking skills and navigating the complex landscape of information and persuasion we encounter every day. In this "long read," we're going to break down five common logical fallacies (with another five in a follow-up post ), look at where they came from (or how they were identified), explore their potential downsides, and, most importantly, provide actionable strategies for spotting them and adjusting our own thinking. The Cheat Sheet Alright, here is the [tl;dr] "too long; didn't read and can't wait" version of all ten fallacies at a glance for those of us who need the shorthand to get back to the rugby or the...

W. C. Fields quotes

The office has all been moved around - new desks (with starter handles to raise and lower them), new high(er) speed network and ... the same old work. At least I have a differing view of the world, my team (well, the team I'm a part of not "my" team) is a lot closer - finally - and it's like an office from the 80's ... or even a classroom. But I still have time to move the crap off the PC : ------ Any man who hates dogs and loves whiskey can't be all bad. Anyone who hates Dogs and Kids Can't be All Bad. Hey! Who took the cork off my lunch??! Who stole the cork from my breakfast? Now don't say you can't swear off drinking, it's easy. I've done it a thousand times. Horse sense is the thing a horse has which keeps it from betting on people. If at first you don't succeed, try, try, again. Then quit, no use being a damn fool about things. Madam, there's no such thing as a tough child - if you parboil them first for seven hours, they alwa...

Papunya Light Show, 2026

Image
On Sunday (11th Oct) evening an absolutely stunning lightning storm flashed it's way slowly over Papunya and I managed to capture some of it on my phone camera. The storm started at dusk and continued into the dead of the night so the phone camera struggled to capture the true majesty of it all, but it did a pretty good job. The raw videos are available in a public Google Photos album,  Papunya light show: video (Oct 2026) From the video I frame captured a bunch of great moments,  Papunya light show: Frame capture (Oct 2026) Now, grainy doesn't really cover how the photos look and, whilst the vast majority are ok, some are distinctly poor. I took the frame captures and ran them through Google's Gemini Flash with the following prompt for each: Enhance this photo to be top quality - remove blur etc. - do not substantially alter any of the objects, subjects - do not alter the style of the photograph.  - Make sure you keep it as close to the original as possible So yes, the f...

Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams - video

This was made the Dom Post/World News section today, not that I can find a link to it on their site!?! Posted here for my benefit as well as yours. Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams Carnegie Mellon Professor Randy Pausch, who is dying from pancreatic cancer, gave his last lecture at the university Sept. 18, 2007, before a packed McConomy Auditorium. In his moving talk, "Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams," Pausch talked about his lessons learned and gave advice to students on how to achieve their own career and personal goals

Miramar boats off

Image
[Updated] Dom Post has a little write up and 2 great pictures of these boats sinking into the waves at a cost of around $30,000 to the Wellington ratepayer.     As r eported a few weeks ago , the Miramar "boat yard" is slowly emptying of the rusting hulks. Rod Drury has a great picture of 2 (out of 3) boats being dragged away by the cool-as red Wellington tug boats* * Red tug boats are up for sale - what a Christmas pressie that would make someone

2AWAs tonight - see everyone at Mighty Mighty, 6pm-6:30pm

Image
Yep, all of you that voted in the Second Annual Wellingtonista Awards will get to find out who has won Best Breakfast and Best Suburban Venue from yours truly around 7pm-ish. And, as none of the people opening the envelopes know the contents, it will be as much as a surprise to me as it is to you to find out where Liz and I will be having breakfast on Sunday morning. My advice is to get to Mighty Mighty [104 Cuba Street, ZoomIn map ] as early as you can (aim for 6:30pm ) but the main thing is not to miss out on tonights party, it will be large! Oh, and don't forget there is a $15 door charge ... unless you're a nominee and have already told us you're coming. And it's not just the giving of 2AWA awards, there's also: spot prizes a celebrity quiz hosted by Russel Brown (to be recorded and popped onto the radio later this year) Blam Blam Blam playing later in the evening (fronted by the highly talented Don McGlashan ) and possibly much much more And finally, bri...

Ballyhoo - a game for Christmas

Image
A game for 4-8 honest adults. The game is best enjoyed with good friends but is also an excellent introduction vehicle for new people joining the circle. Fine wine, good food and a roaring fire have been known to assist with the play. Objective To gain the most number of points AND/OR to find out as much as possible about everyone playing. Equipment pens for all, 3-7 small(ish) pieces of paper per person a hat/container to hold the folded paper Game play Question round This round starts with one person and continues until all players have asked a question. The first player is usually the one that's got that burning question and can't wait to blurt it out. Everyone thinks of a unique question to ask. The more provocative the question and the more likely the question to reveal the better. A person asks their question out loud. Everyone, including the questioner, writes onto a piece of paper: The question (or a shortened version) Their own answer All p...
